Waterfalls worth Visiting in Jamaica

Posted on Tuesday 30 June 2009

A trip to Jamaica is incomplete without a visit to some of the spectacular waterfalls in the region. Whether you prefer a 40-foot waterfall or something as high as 1000 feet, you are sure to find some spectacular sights. Some of the world’s best waterfalls are in Jamaica, and those looking for adventure will enjoy climbing the 600-foot or so Dunn’s River falls. Those not keen on climbing the falls can soak in the beauty of nature around them.

One of the most attractive waterfalls near Negril is the YS falls. The YS falls comprise of a series of waterfalls, several of which flow into pools. There are a few 40-foot waterfalls in the series. One can either climb up the stairs along the falls or take to the rocks of the fall themselves. Visitors with an adventurous streak can enjoy canopy rides that start at the top of the falls or indulge in river tubing.

Mayfield Falls in the Dolphin Head Mountains may not be a 40-foot waterfall but is an ideal place for those looking for a quiet spot. A number of travel websites in Jamaica recommend this place for a family outing. Surrounded by lush tropical foliage, this place has a timeless feel about it. Visitors can try “Falls Walking” out here which is a Jamaican term that means to walk on the rocks lining the bed of the fall.

If a 40-foot waterfall does not appeal to visitors, the roaring river on Shrewsbury Estate is a spectacular place where the gushing ground waters and a natural mountain stream come together. The adventurous can explore the Roaring River Cave, while the musically inclined can make music using bamboo on the rocks in this underground cave. The “Blue Hole”, which is rumored to be high on uranium is also here and thrill-seekers can take a plunge in it.
