What to Look for in Professional Barware

Any owner of a restaurant, a hotel, or a pub, knows that alcohol sales will be a important factor in the success of that business. What this ultimately means is that at some point, either now or in the future they will have to invest in some bar or alcohol serving instruments.

In the grand scheme of things, it can be said that there are three classes of bar equipment required to operate a full service bar in restaurant or hospitality environment. The first category we call the hardware. We use this term to describe all mechanical equipment such as your coolers, your ice machine, and your beer tap system. The second category is of course your glassware, this being the most obvious of all bar equipment.

And even though it may not seem like it at first, the third category may be the most important category of all. This category is your barware, and it is exactly because this category is so often disregarded as insignificant that it often proves the undoing of many potential restaurant successes.

Everything from cocktail shakers to cork screws to bottle openers to zesting tools is included in the barware category. When you cut corners on the restaurant barware, the problem is that you run the risk of either killing your business or your sale. No matter how top shelf the quality of your spirits are or how talented your bartenders are, bad drinks will never sell. Before you buy tools and accessories for your bar, you should know what’s going to give you the best results.

Try to use an insulated cocktail shaker as the colder you can get your cocktails, the better they will be. Metal shakers tend to melt the ice and dilute your spirits. If have to use a Boston shaker, make sure a hawthorn strainer is also on your list. A citrus zester is essential for cutting twists for garnish, but you’re better off with a garnish knife. Buy a wine opener you can trust. Nothing turns customers off more than picking out bits of cork from their wine. And last but not least, portion control is important, so unless you can trust your bartenders, make sure they use spirit measures or double jiggers.
